Per our conversation at the end of class today, I want you to have a conversation with someone (parent, sibling, relative, friend, or peer). After you have your conversation, write a reaction to your conversation.

The person I chose to have a conversation about the war in Afghanistan was my father. He thinks we shouldn't have been there in the first place because their purpose was to go and find Osama Bin Laden. Also, to drive out the Taliban because they are ones protecting him. Somewhat i agree with this because we did go into this because of 9/11 but then again we need to ensure the protection to Afghan people and our people. Another topic we brought up was the United Nations, and how they were sent the first year to keep peace in the country. Now 8 years later the United States have more troops there than ever.

The topic I fully agree with my dad is that we should have gotten out and let the international united nations stabilize the country. We both think it isn't our responsibility, and that this is something we shouldn't be dealing with. There are more important matters to focus on, for example, Afghanistan is supplying 90% of the world's heroin. We should be trying to reduce their production as long as were there. Not only is it the heroin problem but also, the war is costing too much and it is putting us deeper in debt. My father and I think alike, and we didn't disagree on much.

  1. Petra – Wasn’t the purpose of going to Afghanistan in the first place to find Osama bin Laden, the architect behind the 9/11 attacks? Didn’t the intelligence of the US government and military state the bin Laden was in Afghanistan? I am unclear about what you are trying to say in some of your statements in the first paragraph. Interesting point regarding the issue of the drug trade. However, is this part of the War on Terror? If we are there to protect the Afghan people, could we honestly destroy the livelihood of average farmers just trying to make a living? Is there anything you and your father would have disagreed on? If so, what do you think? Overall, be sure to proofread your responses. Also, organize your thoughts in coherent paragraphs. Content 5; Organization 5; Total 30/36.
